FAQs: DUPR

Wolverine Pickleball has entered into an official partnership with DUPR, the most accurate rating system in pickleball. As more and more people enter the sport, it is becoming increasingly important for players to understand what your skill level currently is, and what it will take to get to the next level.

What is DUPR?

Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating is the most accurate and only global rating system in the
sport of pickleball. All players, regardless of their age, gender, location, or skill, are rated on the
same scale between 2.0-5.0 (5.0-8.0 for the Pros) based on their match results.

Why should I create a DUPR account?

Self-ratings will be a thing of the past. With a DUPR account, you will know exactly where you
stand – not just relative to your peers, but to the pros as well. Currently we host play sessions
where you can obtain your DUPR rating, and then play in rating-specific sessions where you
can look to improve your rating while getting the most competitive games possible.

What will Wolverine Pickleball use DUPR for?

The best play is when all players are similar skill level and this objective rating system will help
assure quality play for all at each particular level.

It is important you get a DUPR because your rating will be used for entry into Wolverine
Pickleball organized programming such as open play sessions, clinics, leagues and for skill
assessment and improvement tracking with lessons.

You will need to participate in DUPR rating events. They will be held at several different times &
days so search for the session that applies to the level you play now or if you have a rating- the
group that your rating falls into. For example if you currently have a provisional rating of 3.75*
play in the 3.5-3.99 DUPR session. Oftentimes the provisional ratings are under or over-inflated,
just keep playing it will level out to your true rating in about 25-30 matches. You can play in a
tournament that reports scores to DUPR or you can report your own scores of a private game
you play into DUPR, if all 4 players are DUPR members and agree to report the scores before
the game is played.

Do I have to play in DUPR games?

Not necessarily. If you are a 3.0 or below and content with your current club rating, we will
use your present rating. You may participate in one of the DUPR events if you have a DUPR account. Keep in mind, some tournaments may require DUPR ratings.

If you are a 3.5 or aboveYES you should have a DUPR rating. As our club grows and sessions
become more popular, we will be utilizing the DUPR rating system.

Will play sessions at Wolverine still be divided by skill levels?

Yes, skill level-based events (Skill-level play, Partner Play, Round Robins, Ladders, Leagues,
Shootouts, etc.) will still be organized by your Club Rating and some will require DUPR verification.
If you want to play on a higher-level court, your rating must increase through DUPR games to
earn that privilege.

What is a provisional rating and what makes a rating reliable?

Your DUPR becomes reliable based on your connectivity to other players in the DUPR system and the recency of your results. That means the more you play with different DUPR players and continue playing DUPR
games, the more reliable your rating.

Will Playing in a higher DUPR rating group improve my rating score?

No. Playing in the DUPR rating session that best matches your current rating will improve your
score quicker than playing up. For example if you are a 3.6 and you play in the DUPR session
3.5-3.99 and have success you will increase your score. If you try playing in the 4.0-4.49 you
will not only hurt your score but the score of your partner as well. Work your way up by
successfully building your score at the level you are presently at. Climb the ladder one rung at a
time.

Which games do not count towards my DUPR?

Games where partners are rated with a difference greater than 1.500 will not count. For example, if a 2.2 rated player partners with a 4.0 rated player, the game would be excluded.

Games wherein opponents have a rating difference greater than 1.0. For example, if two 2.5 rated players play against two 3.5 rated players, the game would also be excluded.

Games where neither player/team reaches at least six points are also excluded. If the game is
11-0 the game counts!! Also when we use the timer if the game ends at 16-5, that’s the score
being entered.

Do points scored in a match affect ratings?

Yes! Fight for every point and every game because they all count – not just wins and losses like
traditional ranking systems.

Once I get a verified Rating, am I all finished?

If you have reached 30 matches, yes. For a while at least. DUPR has a “half-life” which means it will start to fall after a certain time period. So if you have lots of matches entered and your half-life is say, 27 and happy with your rating you are set for a while. If your half-life is at 9 then you won’t stay at that rating for long. So watch your half-life and relax and enjoy until it starts getting close to 9 or 10. Then you will need to build it back up
again.

What if I’m unrated and I play against other unrated players?

That’s okay! Those scores will retroactively count once you or the other players play against
someone who does have a DUPR. This is called “connectivity” and it’s a beautiful thing.
